How much do you want to spend on a gas grill and how long do you expect it to last? Most gas grills sold cost less than $300 and are used for 3 years on average, according to the Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Association, a trade group. If you’re hoping your grill will last longer then check the construction of the grill when shopping–nudge from several points to test sturdiness. The more stable, the better. Note the burner warranty (we point this out in the Features & Specs Ratings information for each grill we test). Burners are the most replaced part and a short warranty is a hint that this grill may not last many years. If you keep it maintained, that is. Keeping your grill clean and in tip-top shape not only improves the flavor of grilled food, but also helps extend the life of the grill. Here’s what you’ll want to consider.

What’s behind our gas grill Ratings? Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 159 models in gas grills to see which ones perform best. We look for: Overall score This is based on performance, features, and convenience. The displayed score is out of a total of 100 points. Evenness performance Evenness of heating over the grill’s surface at the highest and lowest setting using all main burners plus the evenness after a 10 minute preheat, using thermocouples. Preheat performance Evaluates the temperature after a 10 minute preheat using thermocouples. It also gives an indication how quickly the grill reaches its maximum temperature. Temperature range Reflects how wide a temperature span the grill offers by comparing temperatures at the high setting and low setting using all the main burners. Indirect cooking This indicates grill temperature when only one or two of the burners are on, to represent a cooking task where the food is placed between or alongside the direct flame. Convenience Factors include grate material, wheels or casters for moving the grill, and useful features such as electronic ignitor.
